2011/2012 Volume 10     May 24, 2012

Dear Kelly,

We've reached the final weeks of school and the big talk on campus of course is Stepping Up. We all are looking forward to applauding our students on June 6 as they step up and out this year! See lots of information below on how you can help. It might be our most exciting Stepping Up yet!

The next day is the last day of school--Thursday, June 7--with early release at 12:30. Enjoy the lazier days of summer and take advantage of the extra time to Sharpen your Saw. Then, keep up the habit, even after summer is over and our schedules get busy again in the fall.

Thank you for another wonderful school year! Life is Good at OCLM...

Bringing Balance to our Busy Lives

Habit #7: Sharpen the Sawhabit 7.jpg

Are you too busy cutting to stop and sharpen your saw? Be more productive and effective by taking time for activities that strengthen your body, mind, spirit and heart.

These aspects of our well being often get pushed aside for what seem to be the more "urgent" things in life. The first six habits have challenged us to discover our priorities and put them first. The final piece is Habit #7, Sharpen the Saw, which reminds us to take care of ourselves so that we are able to make good choices and contribute to our community. Taking care of our bodies, building our skills, affirming our values and staying connected with the people we care about are the basics that allow us to live out our potential and "be there" for those around us.

Take the time today to Sharpen your Saw--exercise, plan a healthy meal for dinner, read a book, meditate or pray, have a date night with your spouse or spend time with a friend. Summertime, when life slows down, is a great time to get in the habit of sharpening the saw.

Our Parent Trainings on the 7 Habits of Leader in Me will continue this fall. Until then, visit www.theleaderinme.org to review the 7 Habits and explore resources for sharing them with your family.

B&N Read Aloud May 18

If you missed Friday's Read Aloud Night, today is the last day to participate in the Barnes & Noble Book Fair. Just mention OCLM at the register and a portion of your purchase will go directly to our OCLM teachers in the form of gift cards so they can add books to their classroom libraries.

Thanks parents for your overwhelming support of our Barnes & Noble Read Aloud Nights this year! Summer Jammy Nights will begin on Monday, June 18, and our monthly B&N Read Aloud Nights resume in the fall!

Fundraising at Stepping Up: Silent Auction and Classroom Baskets

Fundraising is an important part of Stepping Up and provides for special programs and projects unique to OCLM. A Silent Auction of donated items and raffle tickets for our Classroom Opportunity Baskets make Stepping Up our biggest fundraiser of the year.

How can you help?
We are encouraging each family to bring in one silent auction donation per child. You could host a party or share any of your special skills or talents. Consider asking the places you visit regularly if they would support OCLM by providing an item. Hairdressers, spas, restaurants and gyms all are good options. Click Here for a letter you can use to solicit donations for the auction.

Please also bring in items for the Classroom Opportunity Basket for your child's class, and purchase raffle tickets in the presale or at the event. Click Here for a flyer with the basket themes and an order form for raffle tickets.

We need all donations in by next Thursday, May 31. Thank you very much for your efforts and generosity! If you have any questions, please email Rebecca Jubin or call her at (818) 991-4309.
