2011/2012 Volume 9    April 9, 2012

Dear John,

We've got rhythm (it's a dance, dance, Dance-a-thon), we're synergizing (do the Habit #6 wave with us), and we're taking flight (destination: Stepping Up).

We want all of you on board with us at OCLM as we soar through the rest of the school year!

Dance-a-thon (formerly known as the Jog-a-thon) is Wednesday, April 18

Pledge forms due this Wednesday

Yeah, yeah, yeah we'll be dance, dance, dancin' for Conejo soon! Pledge Forms are due this Wednesday for our school-wide Dance-a-thon, and the music plays the following Wednesday, April 18.

Each grade will get a chance to show off their moves for 15 minutes at a time as they dance to benefit our school! Money raised goes directly to art, science and music education, and special school assemblies and field trips.

This is a great gig if you're looking for a volunteer opportunity. Set up for the event is Tuesday, April 17, after school from 3:00-4:30pm. On the day of the event, volunteers are needed from 8-10am, 10am-12pm and 12-1pm to escort groups from their classrooms to the dancing area and dance with the students. Help also is needed for counting pledges and sorting prizes.

Look for the hot pink sign-up sheets posted on the bulletin board in the entry hall to school. You'll be glad you joined in the fun!

This Wednesday: Habit Training for Parents
Habit #6: SynergizeHabit #6 logo

Congratulations, Conejo! We're now aware of our personal responsibilities and how they affect our daily lives and long term goals. We've selected our priorities, put them in order and spend our time on important as well as urgent things. We listen to understand and find ways to make deposits in each others' emotional bank accounts.

We've come a long way since September, and are ready to put our hearts and minds together and Synergize. It sounds fun, and it is! The best part is that it makes our collective ideas more innovative, our goals more far reaching, and our achievements more meaningful.

Join Dr. Sellers this Wednesday, April 11, at 8:30am (Note: morning only this month) for the Parent Training on Habit #6 to learn more. We hope to see you there! Refreshments will be served.

You can also visit www.theleaderinme.org anytime for information on the 7 Habits and resources for sharing them with your family.

Ellis Island Reenactment: Journey to America

OCLM's 2/3 classes reenacted the journey to Ellis Island dressed as immigrants from various countries, complete with bundles with their personal belongings and passports, and accompanying family members in some cases. They began their journey on a makeshift boat, then visited the weigh station, medical examiner and inspector. Some were detained for fees or medical attention, but all eventually made it to America! To celebrate, they shared a buffet of foods from their own families' histories.

Stepping Up: Planning is Underway

First Fun Friday is April 27

This year's Stepping Up theme is "Taking Flight"--think planes, rockets and other flying machines, and helping dreams take flight!  At the last planning meeting, several booths or stations involving flying things, such as remote-control airplanes, glider planes, bottle rockets, and a center where you can make flying machines (anything from paper airplanes to more complicated aircraft) were discussed.

There also will be a center for making a "vision map" with your dreams for the future, and a storytime center, where you can read books about everything that flies--from birds and bees to how the Wright Brothers invented a plane! Many exciting possibilities have come up in the planning, such as a visit from the "Bee Lady," a raptor/bird presentation and a real helicopter landing! This year's team is really "reaching for the stars"!

Stepping Up is OCLM's culminating event of the year (happening Wednesday, June 6), with Fun Fridays leading up to this special day. Please think about how you might be able to help out, by volunteering in the classroom on Fun Fridays (which start on Friday, April 27), joining a booth committee, supplying materials for the event or Fun Fridays and, of course, by being there on June 6.

We need your helping hands to make this event a success for our children! The next Stepping Up planning meeting is Wednesday, April 25, at 2:45pm in Room 18. Watch for emails with more info on how you can help this event Take Flight!

Out in the Field: Trips to Remember

OCLM students from all grade levels traveled far and wide this month on fun field trips. The beautiful weather was a bonus! We are fortunate to have teachers that incorporate these kinds of experiences into their curricula, ones that take students out of their usual environment. They will surely be inspired in the long term by memories of these trips!

Let's Meet Again at Barnes & Noble

Next Read Aloud Night is this Friday, April 13

OCLM's Barnes & Noble Read Aloud Nights are a huge success! Last month, several 4/5 students read their own stories or favorite books from their childhood, and some of the 2/3 graders teamed up with their K/1 buddies to present puppet shows they created together. This month, several K/1 students will share their "ocean reports" and more 4/5 graders will read their own stories and favorites.

Please join us this Friday, April 13, at 6pm, at the Barnes & Noble in the Westlake Village Promenade, Westlake Village, for our next Read Aloud Night! These nights are full of surprises. You never know which stories, original works, plays or reports are in store!

Parents, if your child is interested in reading at one of our Read Aloud Nights, please contact Paula Migliaccio at pmluvspooh@aol.com or 805-498-6054. All are encouraged to come and share. It's a great way for our students to learn poise and gain confidence while entertaining our wonderfully supportive OCLM community!

Healthy Food Promotion: We tried it...they like it!

girls thumbsOn March 14, Conejo and OCLM presented its first Healthy Food Promotion. Sponsored by CVUSD's nutrition program and Join the Farm, students were encouraged to try watermelon radishes and then vote whether they liked them or not. They didn't all like the radishes, but they had fun tasting and voting!

boys thumbsStudents will be treated each month to an organic fruit or vegetable, fresh from the Santa Rosa Valley. On Wednesday, April 18, they will enjoy strawberries. Keep an eye out for recipes and nutritional information in the Thursday packets. Conejo/OCLM is the 7th school in the district to participate in the program.
