Students Make Flutes for Children in Haiti (Ventura County Star)

In the spirit of giving, along with this year's theme of music, Open Classroom Leadership Magnet School in Thousand Oaks hosted a visit Friday from Flutes Across the World.

Founder John Zeretzke taught kindergartners through fifth-graders to make a flute for themselves and another for a child in Haiti.

"We wanted the children to remember that there are kids around the world who are not as fortunate as we are here, so this is a way for them to connect to idea of giving back, particularly around the holidays, while continuing our theme," said Heather Lane, fourth- and fifth-grade teacher.

Zeretzke started Flutes Across the World through the Ojai Music Festival over two years ago. The children make two flutes, he takes the second flute on humanitarian missions to children in other parts of the world and then returns to the schools to show them photos of the mission. He has taken flutes to Nepal, Spain, Honduras, El Salvador, and the Philippines. The flutes on Friday were designated for the Restavek Organization and earthquake survivors in Haiti....
